When you can no longer cope with caring for an elderly relative there are 3 different categories of care unit for older people – private for profit,  not for profit and public institutions – which you refer to according to your means and vacancies.

The Pan Hellenic Union of private residential homes for older people suggests looking out for the following areas which matter in choosing a home: is it certified to operate; does it have the necessary personnel and services etc, again in line with the Ministry recommendations.

There are some homes which are specifically designed for non Greeks e.g. German Protestant Home, in Ambelokipoi.  Details of homes run for different nationalities or services designed to support non Greeks in their own homes or in special institutions are welcome...
There is no sheltered housing for older people in Greece – as yet.
Private care services, usually based on migrant services, are a solution most people with adequate means, turn to as a solution in supporting people in their homes. As yet there is no training for such carers though perhaps this will change with time. Many migrants provide excellent care but they need support and supervision too.
